Natural Materials,
Traditional Methods
We welcome you to Broken Wing Leathercraft Studio!
We love leather, and decided early on that we wanted to individually handcraft our leather goods using only natural materials and traditional methods, so we set out to build our small artisan brand with these core principles in mind. We think we've achieved this goal, and we're happy to craft leather items that are always individually made, attractive, sustainable, and which our customers will value and cherish for many years.
Right at the outset, our hearts and minds were set on using high quality, natural materials, that didn't burden the environment. We wanted to ensure that we could craft sustainable products that customers could really enjoy without any of the additional baggage that comes with toxic mass-production processes.
With that in mind, we not only select quality full-grain leather that will age with it's own individual character, and is capable of weathering many years of regular use. We also, only use the best naturally vegetable-tanned, full-grain leather from certified artisan tanneries in Italy and the UK, that only use skins that are a by-product of the meat industry to minimise unnecessary waste and cruelty. All our leather is produced by hand, the traditional way over many months using only natural dyes made from tree bark and plants. Natural oils and waxes may also be applied by hand at various stages during the process, alongside specialised handling techniques to provide different finishes, and properties to the leather.
At the same time, during our conception, we knew that we wanted to apply the time-honoured craft of saddle-stitching, using quality waxed thread, a technique primarily created for strength and durability, but one that also provides a stylish and practical aesthetic that compliments the natural material it works with.
We are committed to these traditional methods, and have an instinctive aversion to using mass-production techniques, commercial sowing machines, or to use cheap, unwaxed threads just to increase profit margins. For us, that all misses the point of leather craft, it steals the joy from the process, and creates a soulless product than cannot ever match up to the human touch, or provide the quality, individuality and longevity that is absent from the mass market. We wanted to prioritise the care and attention that would enable us to craft genuine, quality leather goods that were as satisfying to produce as they are for our customers to own.
